Finnish Saunas
After a long day in the icy wilderness of Scandinavia, there is nothing quite as revitalising and soothing as Finnish saunas. Not only used as a luxury to calm the mind and body, they are also a bare necessity in these cold Arctic regions. In Scandinavia, the natives believe that Finnish saunas unify the four basic elements; fire, earth, water and air. This sacred experience is believed to promote good health, lower blood pressure, remove toxins from the skin and increase the heart rate.
There are several types of Finnish saunas and few households in Finland are without one. The traditional smoke sauna has been passed down through the ages from ancient ancestry but in more recent years they have seen a revival. A wood burning stove fills the sauna with smoke which is later released once the fire has died down.
A wood stove is probably the most popular of Finnish saunas in the more rural areas of Finland. Birch wood is burnt to heat a metal stove that is piled up with stones which are then doused with water to create more steam. You will find in more public places and inner cities that electricity is used to heat the stones, so no wood is required.
We have a fantastic selection of holidays in Finland that allows you access to different types of Finnish saunas. Enjoy outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, husky sledding or snowshoeing before completely relaxing in the steamy heat of Finnish saunas at the end of the day.
