Day 1 - Arrive in Kuopio
Arrive in Kuopio

Once you have arrived in Kuopio you can collect your hire car and begin your Wild Taiga holiday. Depending on the time of your arrival, you can explore this beautiful city that is bordered by Lake Kallavesi. Perhaps visit the vibrant market and picturesque harbour before retiring at the Metsäkartano Mansion for an overnight stay.

Day 2 - Visit a National Park
Visit a National Park

On your Wild Taiga tour you will have the chance to discover some of the country’s most awe-inspiring national parks. There are two parks within reach of Metsäkartano, Tiilikkäjarvi and Hiidenportti. Tiilikkäjarvi National Park boasts tremendous lakeside views, lovely beaches and easy walking trails, while Hiidenportti National Park is quite mountainous and offers more challenging hiking paths.

Day 3 - Wild Taiga Safari

Drive towards the charming village of Kalevala where you can enjoy a range of cultural exhibitions and displays of local handicrafts. Witness the typical Karelian wooden architecture of the Bomba House, sample some of the region’s local dishes or relax at the spa. Later in the day you can experience a safari through the Wild Taiga (payable before departure) where you will see incredible flora and fauna that are indigenous to these parts. Journey on to Kuhmo, celebrated for its annual Chamber Music Festival, where lush hills and serene lakes fringe a number of scenic nature trails. Find out about the traditions and cultures of Kalevala at the local Information Centre.

Day 4 - Lentiira – Raate

You may want to spend the morning at the Petola Visitor Centre to learn about the fantastic wildlife such as wolves, bears and lynxes before continuing your Wild Taiga tour. Drive through barren wilderness that runs alongside the Russian border as you head through the small villages of Lentiira. Stop off at Raate and visit the fascinating museums that tell of its history and the famous battles that took place here during the Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union.

Day 5 - Hossa
Hossa

The picturesque region of Hossa is situated in the province of Oulu and is a national hiking region. Hossa is also renowned for its intricate rock paintings, the oldest in northern Finland, which you can admire during your time on the Wild Taiga tour. There are approximately 130 lakes and ponds in Hossa where you can enjoy a spot of canoeing or fishing. Alternatively, you can learn how to lasso reindeer at the local reindeer park.

Day 6 - Kuusamo

Make the most of your Wild Taiga holiday and take a trip to Oulanka National Park, an outstanding region bursting with steep fells, deep valleys and fertile grasslands. Canyons that have been formed by the Oulanka River lie throughout this captivating landscape as pine and spruce canopies hang overhead. The stillness and serenity of the park is interrupted by small herds of reindeer that nibble on the mushrooms that carpet the ground. For exceptional views on your Wild Taiga trip, visit the popular skiing resort of Ruka and take a ride up to the top of the hills in the lookout lift before enjoying a swift descent on a summer sled.

Day 7 - The Arctic Circle

Discover life in the Arctic with a trip to Riisitunturi National Park or Korouoma Nature Reserve. Ranua Zoo is another impressive place to explore on your Wild Taiga tour, where Finland’s only polar bears can be found and other Arctic animals live in virtually authentic environments.

Travel on to Rovaniemi, capital of Finnish Lapland and Santa Claus’ official home. This contemporary town retains a magical atmosphere all year round and you can see what Santa gets up to for the rest of the year. Get an exclusive insight into the Sámi way of life, their fascinating culture and a rich history of life in the North at the Arktikum Science Museum. Spend the final night of the Wild Taiga tour in a traditional log cabin and reminisce about your recent adventures as you unwind in a genuine Finnish sauna.

Return your hire car and bid farewell to Finland and the Wild Taiga in preparation for your flight home.
